THE TAKE

Virtua Health’s Voorhees Hospital received recent acclaim for their cafeteria. Word had apparently spread in Facebook groups and on the local news about the surprisingly quality of this hospital’s food. So much so, in fact, that the general public started coming here for dinner.

So I knew there would be no better meal in anticipation of the arrival of our first child than a hospital cafeteria cheesesteak. The bread was a soft, doughy, unremarkable white roll with a pretty poor meat-to-bread ratio. The meat had a Steak-umms characteristic with a smaller, thin but rough chop. There was very little seasoning (maybe they go light on the salt given the setting), but a nice crispiness from the griddle. The only cheese offering was American, and it was piled in the bottom with no mixing. They also left off my onions, unfortunately.

So would I go out of my way to come to the hospital cafeteria for a cheesesteak? No. Was the overall quality of the food better than expected? Absolutely.
