THE TAKE

The Kibitz Room is one of Cherry Hill’s last standing neighborhood Jewish delis. You come here for the pastrami, pickle bar, the mile-high Ruebens, the knishes, and most of all, the matzoh ball soup that nearly has a softball floating in it! But one day I discovered the Jewish cheesesteak, and I had to try it.

The Kibitz Room’s take on this Philadelphia classic is served with their house-made brisket covered with coleslaw, Russian dressing, and pepper jack, and it’s a a winner. The seeded roll is fresh and not too bready, and well stuffed with the delicious brisket. Unlike ribeye, the brisket gives the sandwich a much stronger beefy flavor, and the chop size is ideal. The fat is well rendered as part of the brisket cooking process.

The amount of cheese was generous and was fairly uniformly mixed throughout - the pepper jack adds a nice spice and flavor that makes this unique. The coleslaw is also mixed throughout, and gives a nice crunch. The taste of the Russian dressing was not obvious - I’m note sure if it was left out.

This is a really interesting take on the cheesesteak, and look forward to having this again. There’s also a Rueben version that looks worth trying. And check out the giant cakes!
