Chickie’s & Pete’s is a quintessential Philadelphia establishment. Founded in the Northeast almost 50 years ago, this neighborhood bar now has outposts in stadiums, airports, and on the boardwalk, all selling their famous Crab Fries. But can they make a great cheesesteak?
Right away the roll was a concern, it was pretty small and going stale, and by the end of the sandwich it was falling apart. The meat was shaved thin, but had a very large, loose chop. It was very well-seasoned, and had a nice crispiness around the edges on the meat, and it was very tender. No signs of gristle here. The thin slice really helps the bite-through and crispy texture.
I didn’t have any options for cheese, and I’m not actually sure what I ended up with, but it had a decent flavor and is well mixed throughout. I actually don’t think it was their famous Chickie’s Cheese that comes with the Crab Fries - that would have been good! The onions are plentiful, with a nice medium dice, but they are all piled on top. This results in very onion-heavy bites, which in of itself, has a great flavor.
Chickie’s and Pete’s has other options, like their burgers, cutlet and roast pork sandwiches, and of course seafood. I’d probably choose any of those options over the cheesesteak.
