This is definitely an old Checker’s. But while I don’t remember Checker’s being anything but drive thru, this does have a small inside area where you order and there are some tables. The menu is varied, from steaks to wings to mac and cheese. Curley’s is gaining a big following throughout the region, and seem to be a contender as a leader in the Cheesesteak 2.0 style.

This was a stop on our cheesesteak supertour, so we were splitting sandwiches among a group to be able to fit more in during the day.

The sandwich was served on a decent seeded roll, which I hear is from Aversa’s. The meat-to-bread was good, and that’s mainly because the roll is scooped out. The sandwich is not overstuffed, but also not uniformly stuffed. Half of the sandwich probably had 3/4 of the meat. Cooper Sharp is the default, but there are other options too. The cheese is melty and evenly mixed throughout.

The meat is a large chop, and maybe you could call this more of a slab. That’s not my favorite, and I found that this made it tough to chew. The meat was also not very well seasoned and all I could taste was the cheese. A positive was that the meat had some varied texture, maybe from toasting the whole thing or getting crispy on the griddle. Here’s the real unfortunate part. The onions were excellent, with a great flavor and perfectly cooked. They were diced and the portion was very generous. But…they came on the side. I’m not sure why. I mixed them in myself, but I think they would have improved the overall sandwich’s texture if they were fully integrated in the cheese. Because of that, I’m excluding the onions from the score.

Overall the sandwich was very good. But there are so many other things that I would want to try first here before getting another steak. The wings, their homemade sauce and the mac and cheese entrees looked and smelled incredible.
