Diners are one of the most uniquely New Jersey institutions, and Ponzio’s is one of the best. The Ponzio’s name dates back to the mid-1960’s and has became a favorite destination for diner classics, an excellent bakery and a growing selection of Italian and Greek-inspired entrees. This is one of our favorite places in town.

Ponzio’s occasionally (and not often enough) offers a special cheesesteak that features a garlic bread roll and Cooper Sharp. Unfortunately they didn’t have that one today.

The classic sandwich is served on a standard torpedo roll-not sure if this is baked onsite (probably)- with white American cheese and without grilled onions. The cheese was only on the bottom and not mixed into the meat, but had a very nice melty, creamy texture. The bread was toasted and held up well to the meat.

The bread-to-meat ratio was good, and the meat had a great toothsome texture, with no signs of gristle, and a finer chop. The meat was moist, flavorful and seasoned. Although the roll appeared toasted, the meat was not crispy.
