I remember eating Pat’s Pizza many years ago. It was a small chain of pizza and sandwich shops based in Salem County. Pat’s Select is a modern off-shoot with a strong regional presence and chef-focused menus in upscale-designed cozy restaurants. It’s a family favorite and a go-to for business lunch catering.
Pat’s Select makes a great cheesesteak, but what really makes their offerings special is that like everything else on the menu, cheesesteaks are highly customizable. Want you roll scooped? Just ask. More seasoning on the meat? They’ll do it (they even offer oregano as a choice). The sandwich is smaller (approximately 8” long), but comes with a choice of side. The steakhouse style fries, truffle fries and onion rings are all excellent.
I chose the seeded roll, and there was just enough bread. The entire roll seemed toasted, from the crispiness on the outside to the toasted flavor of the sesame seeds. The inside is just soft enough, but not soggy and the roll holds up well. There is a ciabatta-like characteristic to the roll, and it’s very good.
Cheese options were somewhat limited, including American, provolone, mozzarella, Swiss and a cheese sauce. I chose American. You have a choice of extra cheese, but I don’t feel like it was necessary. The cheese was mixed well throughout and had a good flavor, although it could have been better melted. It had formed a pretty solid mass. That may be a result of driving home with this sandwich. Pat’s has some of the best designed take out boxes I’ve ever seen.
Onions were rough chopped with a good average size. The flavor of the onions was very apparent and added a nice accent to the sandwich.
Even with the prevalence of the onion, the beef flavor really shines through with obvious seasoning. There is a nice chop on beef, with no apparent grizzle. It could be stuffed with more meat. There are crispy bits of meat on the top, which add well to the overall texture. This makes me wonder if the whole sandwich was baked after it was assembled.
