Gaetano’s

I remember Gaetano’s reputation as a leader in cheesesteaks from many years ago, but I never tried it before. They have a handful of locations throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania, but I picked Voorhees out of convenience.

The only option was for a seeded roll, which was pretty soft. I think it was partially scooped out, because the end result was not very bready and also barely held together under the grease of the sandwich. The sesame seeds did not add any flavor, and did not seem toasted.

There were about five cheese options, so I chose American. For the size and volume of meat included, there was nowhere near enough cheese, and it was only on the bottom and not mixed in. I ordered fried onions but there were so few, they did not add to the taste or texture at all. The sandwich was very overstuffed and massive. Now I remember that this is what Gaetano’s is known for-massive sandwiches. The meat was overall very juicy with a distinct fatty (probably the griddle) meat flavoring, and with some definite seasoning. The chop size was fine with no signs of gristle but also no variations in texture throughout. The moistness of the meat wasn’t enough to make up for the lack of cheese. The end result was very dry.
